Cambridge, UK: I’m writing this post whilst watching an interesting TV show on BBC HD called Natural World. The commentor says something along the lines of, “You do today what you want to see tomorrow.” This was in relation to creating a sustainable future. And that’s the impression I have about the Cambridge University Botanical Garden.

Nature, for many artists, is the ultimate form of inspiration – one that is so full of colour, life and beauty; it’s no wonder that we can derive pieces of work from the biggest handcrafter herself, Mother Nature.

These are one of those moments that I stay silent and let nature do all the talking. Flowers, bees and insects make a delicate but profound composition for the photos that I’ve taken. I hope to either derive ideas from Mother Nature for my jewelry line or for practice sketching and painting (I’ve just bought myself a set of water colour pencils which are easy to carry on the go, whether travelling cross country by train or tube or even walking in the streets of London or Cambridge).

The trip to the Gardens ended with a trip back to my favourite classes, i.e. Plant Taxonomy as a subset of my botany classes. Sadly, I’ve forgotten most of the classification of plants, but I guess it’s not too late to brush up the brain cells. The botanical shop had some lovely soaps, and jewelry based on the plants and flora. Also, the mugs with a series of bird sketches and paintings which I really thought was cool – the sound of the bird and ending with the name of the bird. Cool!

This range of handmade mugs is a fabulous gift – I loved the colourful sketches of the birds on the mugs. Now wondering if I should have bought one of them. © Preethi Janice D’Sa
